Yet another WalletHub survey has cast Louisiana in an unfavorable light, ranking it as the country’s least favorable state for women.
I recently received a notification from WalletHub about their latest study, which aimed to identify the best and worst states for women by comparing all 50 states and the District of Columbia on 24 key indicators of living and working conditions for women.
Before you shoot the messenger, let me express my skepticism. It’s hard for me to accept that Louisiana, with its vibrant culture, exquisite cuisine, and charismatic charm (and yes, perhaps boasting some of the most handsome men around—though I admit I may be a tad biased), could be the absolute worst place in the U.S. for women.
Delving into the details of WalletHub’s report, which included factors such as the unemployment rate for women, the percentage of women living in poverty, life expectancy for females, and the proportion of women-owned businesses, Louisiana, unfortunately, scored quite low in all categories.
According to the aggregation of all 24 metrics, Louisiana ranked 51st, even below the District of Columbia.
I’m curious to hear from women, particularly those with experience living in and outside Louisiana. How does your experience align with these findings? Do you think life for women here is as dire as the report suggests? While I’m not claiming we should top the list, being at the bottom is disheartening.
Also, I need to point out that Louisiana is consistently getting railed every time I see a WalletHub survey. I’m not saying there’s no truth in the endless amount of nationwide studies that WalltHub produces; I just wish we could come out on top of one or two of these. Maybe my bias towards Louisiana runs too deep, but I would like to invite WalletHub folks down to the SBC to see what life is really like here.
