What a weekend it was for your Shreveport Mudbugs.
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times. We have been blessed for over two decades with exceptional hockey in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Shreveport Mudbugs, who arrived to town all the way back in 1996, have once again clinched a top seed in the playoffs. We have certainly been blessed as Mudbugs hockey fans when it comes to making the playoffs. In fact, after 22 seasons, the Shreveport Mudbugs have only missed the playoffs once. Not many teams on the planet can say that, no matter the sport or level.
This past weekend, the Shreveport Mudbugs took on the El Paso Rhinos and even though the ‘Bugs clinched a spot in the playoffs weeks ago, there was certainly a lot on the line for both teams. Going into the weekend, El Paso sat in the third spot in the NAHL South division, with our Mudbugs sitting not-so-comfortably in the second position. I say not-so-comfortably because had the Mudbugs lost both home games this past weekend, the Mudbugs would have been pushed down to the third seed, meaning they would lose their all-important first round bye.
However, if you know one thing about the Shreveport Mudbugs, it’s that when the lights are the brightest, they always show up ready. They showed up in a major way Friday night, sealing their fate with an impressive win scoring 4 goals on the night. Technically, one could argue they scored 5 goals, as they shot an empty-netter as time expired. Fans certainly wanted the refs to give the fifth goal to the ‘Bugs, so they could get their free Sonic, of course.
The win secured our team with the second seed in the NAHL playoffs, meaning they will get a nice break as the lower seeds battle it out ion the first round.
